Cypriot Police Service
The Thursday Murder ClubThe Cypriot Police Service appears in the investigation of Gianni Gunduz as both a source of official information and a law-enforcement body whose earlier search is called into question. Its work matters to Chris Hudson’s attempt to establish what happened after Gianni disappeared and whether he can be brought in for questioning over Tony Curran’s murder.
Role in the investigation
After the investigation turns toward Cyprus, Donna De Freitas prints and binds reports sent by the Cypriot Police Service for Chris. The reports become part of his working file, although the account does not specify their contents. Their arrival gives the investigation documentary material from outside the United Kingdom, complementing testimony and other leads gathered by Chris and his associates.
The search for Gianni Gunduz
Chris recalls that when Gianni returned to the United Kingdom in 2000, he disappeared. A warrant was in place, officers flew to Cyprus, and the Cypriot police searched for him, but no one found him. The failure to locate Gianni initially leaves open whether he had evaded the search or been helped to disappear.
Joe Kyprianou later challenges the official appearance of that search. He tells Chris that the officers did not look in the right places and might never have set foot in Northern Cyprus, where Costas Gunduz’s influence was considerable. Costas’s acknowledgment lends weight to Joe’s account, but the narrative presents it as their explanation of the failed search rather than a separately established finding about the service as a whole. The contrast between the recorded search and the alleged limits on its reach makes the missing result difficult to interpret with confidence.
Warrant and unresolved outcome
An international warrant is eventually issued for Gianni to be questioned over Tony Curran’s murder. The evidence connected with the case includes euros traced to a bureau de change in Northern Cyprus shortly before the murder, but the next steps are left to the authorities who might locate him. Chris has done what he can; whether the Cypriot authorities will find Gianni remains uncertain. The service therefore sits at the boundary between an investigation that has assembled a basis for renewed pursuit and an outcome dependent on enforcement beyond Chris’s control.
